Joanna was born and brought up at
Totterdown, Evesham, Worcs. She went to Manchester University to
study Audiology and Education of the Deaf. She worked in a Nottinghamshire
secondary school and further education colleges teaching deaf
children and adults. She then moved to the Sheffield College of
Further Education to continue working with deaf adults.
She married Tom and inherited two step
children, Stephen (b.1965) and Daniela (b.1970). Later Tom and
Joanna had Christopher and Emily.
Tom was a lecturer with many
interests including music, history, southern Italian culture, stamps,
billiards and woodwork. He edited a billiards magazine
and was a member of Filitalia.
