Mary was born out
of wedlock. She was raised by her grand-parents John & Mary Marsh in
Hadlow, Essex until they died in the early 1850's. She had a daughter, Hannah Usborne, born out of wedlock on 30th January 1858 in the Linton Union Workhouse (Coxheath). In 1861 she was working as a house servant for Richard Wilkins who she married in 1863. He was 17 years her senior and worked in Marden as a farm labourer. They had no children. He died in 1865. Amos was from Marden, described as a carter's mate in 1861, later as a labourer. They moved to Boughton Mounchelsea, Kent, where their children were born. By 1891 they had moved back to Marden where Amos was employed as a waggoner on a farm at Little Tilden. They had six children. In 1895 they followed two of their children to York, Ontario, Canada. When Mary died in 1896 Amos returned to Marden and re-married. In 1904 he went back to live with his second wife (Mary nee Walters) in Etobicoke, Ontario Canada. |
