Educated Repton College 1893-1896. Attended Royal Military Academy, Woolwich where he won the Pollock Medal. Joined the Royal Engineers in 1898. Second Lieutenant in the Boer War 1900-1902. Awarded Queen's Medal (4 clasps) and the Kings Medal (2 clasps). Promoted Captain in 1907, appointed Director of Public Works by Sir Henry Hesketh Bell and in that year built Government House for him overlooking Lake Victoria in Entebbe, Uganda.
