Thunder
Hall
Following
his father, John started his career as a corn merchant living in Chatham.
In 1801 he was a cow-keeper before becoming a schoolmaster in Gillingham,
Kent. He was described
in the will of his uncle John as being lame.
He inherited various properties on the death of his father in 1782 which
had belonged to uncle John. He surrendered much of this property to
his uncle William in exchange for "various legacies". He also
inherited
Thunder Hall, a large mid-19th
century alteration to a 17th century mansion
(the council's description) on the edge
of the old part of Ware town (sold in 1795). It is now partly empty and decaying, and
partly converted into flats.
