John was disinherited in the will of his father in 1774. Was this the reason he began spelling his name Usborne? All Edward's assets were left to his brothers "on condition that they do not in any way consult or employ my eldest son John Osborne in the farming business but leave him to shift for himself that he may learn by experience what a father's advice could never make him do; nor that they ever suffer him to control or squander any of their substance but that they remain masters of my personal estate without any molestation from him.
